| | "Unfinished" - CAN | ] | from The Guardian:
First Battlestar Galactica was reinvented as a must-watch TV show and clever allegory for US foreign policy post-9/11. Then the Doctor returned from Gallifrey to make sci-fi cool and revive mainstream family viewing.
Now Sky One is hoping to continue the successful reinvention of the genre with a multimillion-pound remake of the 1970s British favourite Blake's 7. The broadcaster yesterday announced that it had approved the development of two new scripts from the production company that holds the rights to the series. like the new Dr. Who or BSG, i probably won't get around to watching this either. and isn't it time for a Buck Rogers remake? they should go with the style of the '80s TSR re-envisioning for that. |

i am unreasonably annoyed that i can't remember the passwords to either of my ICQ accounts, and none of the email addresses i've tried (going back to my very first ones) to have it sent to me, work. the first account was set up in 1997, which was just a decade ago, but an aspect of that lies beyond memory and it's really buggin' me.

saw the 70mm version of Blade Runner: The Final Cut at the Cinerama tonight (in Seattle). this was the first time i've seen it in the theatre (and a wide-screen panoramic one, at that) and it was amazing. this film becomes more emotionally moving every time i see it. still one of my all-time favorites...

i'm not the type to post obituaries of more well-known people, but this one is heartfelt.
RIP
Paul Raven (1961 - 2007)

bassist for Killing Joke, Prong (and a lot of other groups, including Ministry, most recently)
Ted Parsons' statement
one of my most favorite bass players ever, and a part of one of the best bands around... Raven was an integral part of this band going back some 25 years.. this sucks |

| headphone recommendations, <$100 |
[Oct. 9th, 2007|01:50 am] |
my current lineup, from highest MSRP to lowest:
Pioneer Monitor 10R (over the head) Shure E2C (thanks omaha) (in-ear) some noise-cancelling things from Creative that are at work that i use to drown out the din and rabble of cow-orkers and i can't remember the model number (over the head) Sennheiser PMX 60 (behind the head) something that came with the Panasonic portable tape player/radio...
the Pioneers are what i use for most music listening. the problem is that while they do sound clear and clean, they are also flat (due to being studio monitors) and i want something more 'fun' to listen with. after a lot of reading headphone.com and amazon.com reviews and such for the past two years, i'm currently deciding between the Grado SR 60 and the Grado SR 80. i'm wondering if the slightly improved sound quality of the SR 80 is worth the trouble of getting a headphone amp for it, or to just get the 60s and also get the upper-end phone pads to replace the ones they come with? or does anyone have another idea? |

| ERASURE (25.07.07, Moore Theater, Seattle) + etc |
[Jul. 25th, 2007|02:04 am] |
finally, i only had to wait 15 years to see them. so my @&%# job requires me to be at work for 10 hours a day, and i got downtown at 9:30, at which time the venue was no longer selling admission. i gave the door tickettaker my sob-story and she said if someone walked out and wasn't coming back, i could take their stub and gain entry with it (she was the only person working the entrance). just then, a group of three guys walked out and she asked them if they were indeed not returning. they affirmed so, and i practically jumped on them asking for a ticket. one of them said sure, it's a good seat and gave it to me. row J, main floor! i got there just during the start of intermission, meaning i missed the entire first half... but if i could fly to MN for the show at First Ave this Friday... i know i would've preferred seeing them at a similar-type venue here, like the Showbox. RECOMMENDED to all you MPLS people, if so inclined ($32.50 - good deal, i say). let me know if Andy loses his voice by then, as he kept rubbing his throat - he sounded quite good, tho.

speaking of flying to the homestate, i'm going to be in MN for all of 2.5 days on Labor Day weekend, as that's all the time i could get off work, for my brother's third wedding reception (having already had ones in Austin, TX, where he and his wife currently live, and somewhere in Kashmir, where she's from). seeing friends would be nice, but perhaps not entirely practical... unless you want to come to this reception thing... let me know if so.
and i negotiated successfully to get this weekend off! i am so happy. even though those will be the last days i don't have to work until the end of August for the aforementioned event. :( :( :((((( |

[Jul. 10th, 2007|07:20 pm] |
ok stupid situation. while driving the UHaul van ... well, backing out of my new semi-sorta driveway onto a crowded street, i backed the van into a car door, due to not reading the rearview mirror correctly. i suck, i know it. damage was a sizeable dent in the driver side door, plus a broken door-handle (that i could see). anyways, i left my info on the windshield, and i was called back by the person who owned the car. it looked like the SafeMove 'protection' i purchased from UHaul only covers damage done to the vehicle you rent from them - and there was none to speak of on that vehicle. she went to her insurance company, who then called me today, saying that they would cover her cost of repairs, then bill *me for the that cost. is this true? i do not have insurance (thus why i purchased this one through UHaul) as i do not own a car. the initial (sight-unseen) damage cost repair estimate was 'up to $1200', which seems pretty unlikely for a 1996 Toyota Paseo. anyone know what standard operating procedure is in situations like these? or what UHaul's responsibilities are, if any? i looked on the website and i couldn't find any mention of damage to other vehicles listed - only under the 'SuperSafeMove' protection, which i honestly don't remember being listed on the contract. so UHaul is kinda on my blacklist right now... i wanted to go with a local vehicle rental place like i did last move, but there weren't any nearby. i am somewhat frantic right now.
and here i thought moving myself and enlisting the help of friends would be the 'cheap' option..... : / |

did anyone else's parents make sauerkraut in the basement? i remember chopped cabbage going into pails of brine, then being covered for some weeks... and then canned (Mason jar'ed) afterwards. i'm having a big craving for it right now, maybe with a Polski vegsausage..?? does anyone else in the PNW region want to get a Reuben sometime... maybe at the Wayward...
oh and i got notice to move out of the house i'm living in by July, as someone is about to purchase it for an obscene amount of money and it wasn't even on the market! hooray! the current owners are soon-to-be millionaires and i'm... i'm hittin the streets! so i'm putting the violin lessons off for now, til i get resettled. |

| | Fine Young Cannibals - "Suspicious Minds" | ] | keees, i sorta kinda want to learn violin. it's one of those things that resurfaces over the past some odd-number of years. i don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a beginner instrument, as it may be that i not sustain the commitment needed. i haven't even really tried it before! so the questions are:
- can i buy a cheap piece of crap and will it actually be useful for learning? if i can get something for say, $60, and it's faaaar from the greatest... that's way fine by me.
- alternatively, is there any place that i can just sorta do trial lessons without having to buy an instrument? how much do rentals tend to go for?
- how loud is this thing? can i practice late at night in the basement without waking up the other people in the house?
i really do want to learn, tho.

one of the more interesting times of the year (so far) this evening, talking about current US copyright law with Kristin Hersh..?! she did say that although Warner Bros won't approve, that she personally considers all of her solo material, side-projects and Throwing Muses albums to be under the Creative Commons license (freely distributable) and believes this to be the real future of recorded music.
(i thought she said that remixes and adaptations were ok for all of her music, but it only displays CC Music Sharing on her label material. probably this is to avoid the record company wrath...)
anyways, free tunes here... you can also find live concerts (solo, 50 Foot Wave and Throwing Muses) at archive.org |

Quento. The giant dragonfly. Perfect eyesight helps him to see everything around... ...and kill then.
Reinsaw. The flying head. Always invisible unless the sunlight is shining on his thin skin. So if you are making your way in darkness, alone... ...exert your ears.
Rokk. The living mass of rock. Has a voice that beckons people right in the trap. Nobody can tell you what this voice sounds like. Because this sound is the last you hear.
Thorn. The slave of the Desert Lord. They hunt with a little groups, wrap you into a clew of their bodies and bring you back to his Lord. The only hope is fire.
Nite. The night stranger. Appears on the battlefields and feeds by souls of dead. At night time he has a head. I wish you'll never see this head.
Blacky. The black bewitched cat. He was a regular cat. But one witch picked him up and made him undying and evil. Cover your face from his long claws.
Stinky. He's a mutant made by elfs to use as vehicle. He has no head and ruling mindly. Usually he's loaded by different sorts of spells. Beware of that cargo.
Dino. The dinosaur's mouldy sceleton. Feeds by people's emotions getting them emotionally drained. As a result of this, people are dying. Can't touch you when you are sleeping.

the Seattle snowfall has put me in a resoundingly good mood! yea! the one on Monday started out with, like little.. Dippin' Dots. that's what the stuff that fell from the sky resembled. it was rad. tonight it's biggin' clumps o' flakes. neither of these are very Minnesota-like, but they're freakin', tweakin' awesome anyways.
for a while now, i've been consumed with the search for national identity, as it relates to ethnic ancestry and birthright (is that the right term? this is the first time i've put this to paperscreen...) my ethnicity is from at least 6 countries, but i do have a majority stake in Finland, Germany and Sweden*. i've always been fascinated with people's genetic make-up by world region - but it's become almost overbearing over the past year or so. it was to the point where i really wanted to pull up all stakes and drop myself into the widest snow-covered plains of Oulu... hmm.
so i started reading Kalevala to attempt to sate this unbalanced yearning for 'homeland'. thankfully, i stumbled upon this quote in the foreword, spoken by a Finnish scholar the year before i was born:
"No nation has its own culture, only its own barbarism." -- Kustaa Vilkuna **
so just like that, a recent and persistent burden has been lightened for me. my search for 'cultural purity' is really not what i'm looking for, if it ever really existed at all.
there's about 2" of snow accumulation at this time, but with the temperature now at 32F(0C), it will turn to snow and destroy this lush icy ground cover. [sad emote]
* (the smaller parts come from Ireland, Wales and Poland.)
** Finland itself is a country whose sense of national identity only came to the fore fairly recently (mid 1800's, beginning with the publication of Kalevala), having been a part of the Kingdom of Sweden for so many centuries. |

i guess every tech-oriented, slightly absent-minded person has to lose at least one high-priced media player/game handheld at some point, and now it's my turn. i left my Gamepark Holdings GP2X game/media player on the 4 route bus Saturday night (10/28/06), around 10pm. called Metro Transit Lost & Found, they didn't have it. i'm going to keep checking in there, but seeing as how even cheap, large items i've left on an empty bus near the end of its route (e.g. a military surplus jacket) hadn't ever turned up in the l&r, i'm not holding out too much hope. it's killin' me, cuz i use this thing nearly every day, from playing arcade games/NES/SEGA/Amiga/Atari whatever to reading ebooks... it was a one-time-only 30th b-day gift from my brother, too.
